Today is First Reads Friday, which means we give you the rundown on an upcoming book.  Usually, the rundown is in the form of a review, but this week is going to be a little different.  We’re going to feature some creative content for an upcoming book, namely, Lily Anderson’s forthcoming Undead Girl Gang.

This isn’t Lily Anderson‘s first time on the blog, but that’s because we love her words and wit and her books in general. To top it off, Undead Girl Gang was one of my most anticipated books of the year, so I immediately agreed to host a date on this blog tour without ever having read the book.  As I was seeking inspiration for this post and reading the book, I realized that this was going to be one of my favorite books of the year.  From witchy vigilante justice, to dedicated and positive girl friendships to back-handed comments about racism in a small town, a strong focus on Wicca, body positivity and being yourself, I can’t pinpoint one thing I loved above all else in this book, it was a perfect potion! I am thrilled to tell you a little bit more about this book and then match up characters to their corresponding enamel pins.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson

Hardcover, 272 pages

Expected publication: May 8th 2018 by Razorbill

Veronica Mars meets The Craft when a teen girl investigates the suspicious deaths of three classmates and accidentally ends up bringing them back to life to form a hilariously unlikely–and unwilling–vigilante girl gang.

Meet teenage Wiccan Mila Flores, who truly could not care less what you think about her Doc Martens, her attitude, or her weight because she knows that, no matter what, her BFF Riley is right by her side.

So when Riley and Fairmont Academy mean girls June Phelan-Park and Dayton Nesseth die under suspicious circumstances, Mila refuses to believe everyone’s explanation that her BFF was involved in a suicide pact. Instead, armed with a tube of lip gloss and an ancient grimoire, Mila does the unthinkable to uncover the truth: she brings the girls back to life.

Unfortunately, Riley, June, and Dayton have no recollection of their murders. But they do have unfinished business to attend to. Now, with only seven days until the spell wears off and the girls return to their graves, Mila must wrangle the distracted group of undead teens and work fast to discover their murderer…before the killer strikes again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lily Anderson

Lily Anderson is a school librarian and Melvil Dewey fangirl with an ever-growing collection of musical theater tattoos and Harry Potter ephemera. She lives in Northern California. She is also the author of THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN ME IS YOU and NOT NOW, NOT EVER. She tweets @ms_lilyanderson.

CHARACTER PINS

I was inspired by the cover aesthetic to find pins that match each of the characters in this book to give you a better idea of their personalities and roles in this book. I think it’s entirely a coincidence that almost everything I chose is pink.

Know Your Power Pin for MilaMila is both the main character and the most powerful witch in this book for many reasons. We wouldn’t have an Undead Girl Gang without her, so I am gifting her with GlitterPunkJewellrey’s Know Your Power enamel pin for her every day jean jacket.

Resting Witch Face for RileyRiley is Mila’s other half and best and only friend and, unfortunately, recently deceased. She has the strength and brawn to say the things that Mila can only think, but when she is resurrected, things are a little dicey between them. For these reasons, in addition to her addiction to dying her hair, the resting witch face pin from NightlyMade will accompany Riley to the hereafter.

Cursed Enamel Pin for XanderXander is Riley’s brother and the unrequited love of Mila’s life. He’s  good looking, popular and also happens to be the son of the only funeral home owners in town. He has the misfortune to not only be mourning over his sister, Riley, but also his ex-girlfriend, June’s, recent death. Needless to say the perfect pin to describe him is NineLivesPin’s Cursed enamel pin.

Hands June + Dayton

Moth PinJune and Dayton are Mila and Riley’s nemesis literally come to zombie life.  Since they are best friends and co-conspirators in both in life and death, I have combined their pin assignments.  Northern Spells glitter moth pin for certain early events and MikaylaButchart’s rose resilience enamel lapel pin for their everlasting friendship.
