If it wasn’t for schools and libraries in the area, it seems like we would have a Spring without any author events in the area. Luckily for us, we were invited to the Hillsborough County Public Schools 1st Annual Student Literacy and Media Showcase (SLAM) last week where we not only got to experience the creativity of Hillsborough County’s K-12 students, but got to visit with some of our favorite YA Authors.
WHAT IS SLAM?
Library Media Services is proud to introduce a new district program and event for the 2016-2017 school year. The Student Literacy and Media (SLAM) Showcase will be a celebration of reading and literacy through students’ artistic and digital expressions in response to quality literature from state reading award lists. Students at participating schools will have the opportunity to share their creativity at their schools first. Exemplary selections will go on to the District SLAM on March 22, 2017 at the Tampa Convention Center where those students will be recognized, attend an art and film festival of student created 2D art and book trailers, meet authors of some of the award nominated books, and enjoy other literacy based activities.
WHO WAS THERE?
Jenn Marie Thorne and SJ Kincaid made appearances and spoke to highly engaged students, eager to learn about their writing process.
Plus we attended signings for both Jenn & SJ after their speaking engagements.
About Jenn Marie Thorne
Hi there! I’m Jenn. I’m a YA author currently living in Florida, but I’ve also lived in Tennessee, New Orleans, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York City, Los Angeles, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and the UK, so I write about all of the above.
Some of my favorite things are: hanging out with my charming husband; walking my mystery-hound Molly; accidentally cooking way too much pasta and then eating the entire bowl anyway; singing along with opera recordings; swimming circles around anchored boats; learning languages and immersing myself in new cultures; playing the piano very badly; Dragon Age; hiking in the hills; writing books about fabulous, flawed, courageous young women finding their place in the world.
About SJ Kincaid
S.J. Kincaid was born in Alabama, grew up in California, and attended high school in New Hampshire, but it was while living beside a haunted graveyard in Scotland that she realized that she wanted to be a writer. Her debut, Insignia, came out in July of 2012. The second book in the series, Vortex was released in July of 2013. The final book in the trilogy, Catalyst, came out October 28, 2014. Her standalone novel The Diabolic will be released in fall 2016.
Hillsborough county students are so very talented (and I’m not saying this because this is my home county)! I’m sharing the pieces I found that were inspired by some of our favorite YA, like Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda and Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen. My photos don’t even do justice to these pieces.
From members of the Arts Council, The City of Tampa to teachers we knew, everyone agreed the first annual SLAM event was a hit and we can’t wait for more!!
