Truthwitch, Book 1 in Sarah Dennard’s new fantasy series Witchlands, doesn’t release officially until January 5th, but with a comprehensive marketing campaign including chapter releases, giveaways and an immersive website, you can dive in now.

I started to notice the Truthwitch buzz several weeks ago. My Twitter feed was continuously populated with Truthwitch updates and teasers. I wasn’t familiar with the series, but the eye catching book cover of a hooded witch standing on an outcropping of rocks with a sword in each hand and waves arching around her had me intrigued. I finally broke down and decided to explore author Susan Dennard’s TRUTHWITCH website. After reading the chapter excerpts and exploring the Witchlands, I too was under the Truthwitch’s spell.

Dennard’s TRUTHWITCH website which was created by the folks at Tor Teen,  immerses you in the world of the Witchlands. The website allows you to explore the geography, listen to a playlist, take quizzes to see which nation you are from and which character you’re most like (I’m from Dalmotti and I’m most like Safiya fon Hasstrell, the Truthwitch!) there’s even a tutorial on how to swear like the Truthwitch. Having spent an afternoon exploring the Witchland website, I feel like I already know Safiya and Iseult and I haven’t even cracked the spine on the book yet. Well played, Dennard. Well played.

Truthwitch will be released January 5, 2015 and Susan Dennard is going on limited tour through New York, Illinois, Minnesota and California January 11th through 18th. If you can’t make one of her tour dates, you can get book swag by pre-ordering Truthwitch (details on the website) and by Tweeting #Truthwitch you can unlock additional scenes and trailers.

The website is fun, but it’s no substitute for the book. The two previews chapters I read  g0t me excited for the main event. If the digital blitz is any indication of the book, Truthwitch should be the first MUST READ book of 2016.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a “witchery”, a magical skill that sets them apart from others.

In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble—as two desperate young women know all too well.

Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It’s a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially amongst the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.

Iseult, a Threadwitch, can see the invisible ties that bind and entangle the lives around her—but she cannot see the bonds that touch her own heart. Her unlikely friendship with Safi has taken her from life as an outcast into one of reckless adventure, where she is a cool, wary balance to Safi’s hotheaded impulsiveness.

Safi and Iseult just want to be free to live their own lives, but war is coming to the Witchlands. With the help of the cunning Prince Merik (a Windwitch and ship’s captain) and the hindrance of a Bloodwitch bent.

Truthwitch comes out January 5th but you can pre-order today.
