Harry Potter Illustrator in Tampa!

The Greater Brandon Arts Council is hosting a Seminar with Caldecott-winning illustrator, Mary GrandPré on Saturday, November 21st.  Most famously, she designed the original American covers for JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series.  Let’s not delay, but dig into the details straight away!

  • Date: Saturday, November 21st, 2015
  • Time: 1:30pm to 4:00pm
  • Location: Bloomingdale Regional Library (map)
  • Admission: Free!
  • There will be no book signing at this workshop
  • Refreshments and snacks will be available.

More details about GrandPre and the event can be found here and here.  This event is geared towards writers and authors, but in finding out how she works, we look forward to hearing about her collaboration with J. K. Rowling.  We look forward to seeing you all there!

I read The Scorpion Rules about 2 weeks ago. I immediately wrote my review but hadn’t quite got it ready for publication. Between then and now the terrorist attacks in Paris happened. It’s not until I sat down today to finalize this review that I started to think about The Scorpion Rules in the context of what is actually happening in the world today. Erin Bow’s glimpse into what a future run by an Artificial Intelligence who assassinates children in an effort to maintain world peace poses the question of whether the ends justify the means even if we lose our humanity along the way.

Sarah J. Mass Down Under and in the Land of Hobbits (aka Australia & New Zealand)

Anyone who’s been paying attention knows that Sarah J. Maas has been KILLING IT- assassin style- this year. Mass has dominated the world of YA fantasy with her Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorn and Roses series. Just last month it was announced by Publisher’s Weekly that Throne of Glass has been optioned for television by the Mark Gordan Company, the folks behind Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.

Maas is currently on her first tour of Australia and New Zealand. If you follow Maas’s Instagram you’ve seen the beautiful landscapes she’s been visiting on foot and by helicopter. Makes you wonder if there’s any location scouting going on? We can only hope.

Allegiant Trailer Response…Or, How in Dystopia?

Like seemingly everyone else in the world, we LOVED the Divergent book series.  To clarify that sentiment, we LOVED Divergent, overlooked the convenient plot devices of Insurgent and reluctantly resigned ourselves to Allegient only because we like to see things through.
